Remembering Michael Jackson on his 52nd birthday.

Posted by SouthernGurl

Today, August 29th marks what would have been Michael Jackson's 52nd birthday. Words can't begin to express how much this man was loved, adored and cherished by nearly a billion people, including me. And although he left us a little over a year ago, his contributions to the world will live on forever. His legacy will never die. No matter how you feel about Michael as a person, no one can deny his profound influence on music, music videos and philanthropy.

He is loved and missed dearly.

Needless to say, Michael left a mark with some of the greatest songs ever recorded. So in honor of that, I would like to celebrate his life by posting MJ's You Rock My World (with Chris Tucker) video. Well, I can't honestly say this song is one of my favorites because as a lifelong fan, there is no such thing as having a favorite MJ song/video. But since I can't post each and everyone of his videos, I chose an up-tempo song that makes me want to get up and dance my ass off as soon as I hear its intro.

Big news for those of you who enjoyed watching Ice Cube's and Ali LeRoi's Are We There Yet? sitcom starring Terry Crews and Essence Atkins. Personally, I just could never get into it no matter how hard I tried...and I really tried. After watching him co-star alongside Tichina Arnold for four years on Everybody Hates Chris (which was also co-created and executive produced by Ali), I just couldn't grasp the concept of watching him play husband to Essence. I never saw any chemistry between the two. As a matter of fact, the only time I laughed was when Ice Cube would make a cameo appearance. Anyway, for all you fans, don't fret. The show hasn't been canceled. According to Deadline.com, the top brass at TBS are in the last stages of finalizing a deal to order, get this, 90 more episodes. During its trial 10-episode run, the show averaged an 1.9 rating. Apparently as far as TBS is concerned a rating of 2.0 would automatically get a show renewed for more episodes. And even though AWTY's rating was just shy of that, they still gave the show a green light to return. So, kudos to them. Once those episodes are taped and aired, there's also buzz about taking the show into syndication a la Tyler Perry's House of Payne. Meet the Browns will likely go into syndication next.

Let me find out TBS is trying to become the new millennium version of the WB and UPN! Because whether we want to admit it or not, right about now, with the airing of House of Payne, Meet the Browns, Are We There Yet? and that little mini-sode thingy called My Manny (I can't get into that either!), TBS is the only network currently airing multiple Black sitcoms...at least until B.E.T. get up off their tails and start airing new episodes of The Game. Production is supposed to start later this year. B.E.T. is also bringing actress Tracee Ellis Ross back to the small screen in a new original comedy series called Reed Between the Lines. The sitcom centers around Dr. Carla Reed (played by Ross), a busy psychiatrist, wife and mom struggling to balance her job and her happy but chaotic homelife. The show began production this week.

Mike Bivins Surprise B-Day party; B.B.D. performance pics.

Posted by SouthernGurl

B.C.M. wants to wish Michael Bivins of New Edition/Bell Biv Devoe a belated 42nd birthday! His beautiful wife Teasha threw him a surprise birthday party at Suzie Wong's in New York City earlier this week. His birthday was Tuesday, August 10th. Mike and the other fellas (with the exception of Bobby) of New Edition are prime examples of how 'black don't crack!' These guys just don't age! And I'm sure if Bobby hadn't submerged himself in all of those drugs, alcohol and fast living, he wouldn't look as torn down as he does. But it's good to know he's still around to do his thing. Anywhoo, check out photos from Biv 10's party below.
And the fellas of B.B.D. are still performing as if they're still in their mid-20s. Below are pictures of Mike, Ronnie and Rickey performing at B.B. Kings earlier this year. The group is currently on tour.

Idris Elba in Upscale magazine.

Posted by SouthernGurl

Idris Elba has been featured on the covers of several magazines over the past few months. God, he is so beautiful! Anyway, Upscale magazine is no exception. Idris can be seen gracing their August 2010 issue. In his cover story, this British brother talked a little about his personal life (something he doesn't do too often) including his two children; 8-year-old daughter, Isan (with his ex-wife), and infant son, Otenga (with his current girlfriend). And can yall believe that this man actually thinks people aren't interested in who he dates? Excerpts from his interview are below.
IDRIS ON BEING A SEX SYMBOL: Black men have never been sexy. We're 'sportsmen.' We're 'intimidating.' We're not 'good fathers.' So we need that. I think we should celebrate that. But am I a sex symbol? I don't know. Not everybody likes one thing.

IDRIS ON HIS PERSONAL LIFE: I'm sure people are curious, but do they really care? No. Jesus Christ, does it make a difference in their lives? No, not at all. ...I don't hide my girlfriend in a box or anything like that. I keep a very real existence in my real life. I go shopping for food myself. I have kids. I love my children and I love my kids. But they are not part of that world.

IDRIS ON WHY HE ENJOYS 'MODERATE' SUPER-STARDOM: When you're promoting a film, you become a property. That is actually one of the harder pills to swallow, as far as success is concerned. You have to be accessible all the time. As I climb the ladder, I realize that I'm becoming more and more of a recluse. One can water down their worth if they're over exposed. I like it [the moderate super-stardom] for personal reasons. For my work reasons, it's important that my name is recognizable, to make my films profitable. That's sort of my push-pull dilemma. I don't want it to be at the expense of my personal life to the point where I just can't go anywhere.

Ginuwine & Sole in Sister 2 Sister magazine (September 2010)

Posted by SouthernGurl

Ginuwine and his beautiful wife Sole cover the September 2010 issue of Sister 2 Sister magazine. In their feature story, the couple, who met in 1999 and married in 2003, touched on several topics including how they met, dealing with groupies, Ginuwine's suicide attempt after the deaths of him mom and dad (and how Sole saved him), Ginuwine's sex symbol status, his short stays in jail (bet yall didn't know about that, huh?!), his four babymamas (that either!) and how he almost ended up with 31 children! The singer/actor also has a new cd titled Elgin coming out in September. Check out the excerpts below:
GINUWINE & SOLE ON HOW THEY MET:
SOLE: We met in 1999. Tyrese introduced us. Ginuwine was looking for me.
GINUWINE: Yeah, I had seen her on TV. I said, 'Oh, I'm going to get that.' That's what I said; because she was very attractive. She was just the one I wanted. I was actually doing a video called 'None of Your Friends' Business.' I'd seen her quite a few times because we was doing shows together. I asked her if she would be in the video. And she was like, yeah. So basically that's how it started.
GINUWINE & SOLE ON DEALING WITH GROUPIES:
GINUWINE: If someone is a little wild, I'm like, 'Hello, this is my wife.' and they get it.
SOLE: It really doesn't happen. I think maybe once or twice someone has been over the top and I will say something. I said, 'Don't get slapped!' Because she was being funny. I forgot about that--and that was our most recent one. I don't worry about the young girls.
GINUWINE ON IF HE CARED ABOUT HIS POPULARITY LEVEL & SEX SYMBOL STATUS WANING AFTER HE MARRIED SOLE: Yeah, absolutely Because it's more like a fantasy (for female fans). But at that time I really didn't care....I cared but she (Sole) is way more important to me than some fans. When it first happened, yeah--for, like the first three years. I felt like it [popularity] might have because I didn't have any hit records. I don't think if I come out with a hit record someone is going to say, 'I'm not going to buy it because he's married.' And then, when I got older, I just felt like, 'Why would I want fans that didn't want me to be happy?' So the people that I want to support me want to see me happy and I want to make them happy with my music. [On being a sex symbol today]: I knew that came with the territory, but I never woke up and was like, 'I'm too sexy for my shirt.' I didn't think that. I knew I wasn't ugly, but I didn't feel like I was that doggone thing. Sole thinks I did. But I promise you I didn't.

GINUWINE ON IF HIS FOUR BABYMAMAS ARE JEALOUS OF HIS WIFE & HOW HE COULD HAVE ENDED UP WITH 31 KIDS:
GINUWINE: If they are, they never let it be known to me. My babies' mamas--we were together for a little period of time. Not a long period of time. Nor was I married to any of them. Each one of them I spent time with. I was very lucky. When I was on the road before her (Sole), I was doing a lot of craziness. I have the amount of kids that I have, but it could have been a lot more. It could have been 31.
SOLE: It could have been more than that.

Chris Brown & T.I. perform at 'Takers' premiere after-party.

Posted by SouthernGurl

T.I. (along with Keri Hilson) took to the stage last night to perform at the Takers premiere after-party at club Boulevard. Chris Brown also showed off his moves to a packed house as he performed a medley of a couple of his top 10 hits.
However, it's Chris' performance as Jesse Attica in the movie that has everyone talking. For those of you who don't know, the singer did the majority of his stunt after convincing producers to allow him to leap through windows, scale buildings and jump on cars while filming a heated chase. He told MTV News:
"The most thrilling part about this movie is probably the stunts. I do, like, 96 per cent of my stunts. Some stunts they wanna use the doubles; I don't wanna use the double! And they're like, 'We have to for safety and insurance issues.' I think the most exciting parts are the stunts, getting to blow stuff up, shoot guns, you know what I'm saying. It's all fun!

When acting, I feel like it's cool to use your strengths, but it's also cool to use your other abilities as well. I didn't just wanna do movies that had consistent dancing and singing. I wanted to do stuff that pushes me as an actor at the end of the day. Because you have people like T.I. and Common that do stuff that's not around what they do in the entertainment industry as far as music, and they succeeded. So I just wanna branch over to that, especially like Will Smith. He comes from rapping and going right into the acting thing, so I wanna come from the singing parts and go into acting, and people can tell the difference. I think that with this role, it was more intense, more action, more stuff that I love to do, what I love to see in movies.
